Chapter 29 - Day 33

As Drew was escorted from the General’s office, he felt Carol enter his domain and follow a step behind. The core using soldiers continued to shield the General, even after he left the office, wary of anything he may try.

When he entered the outer office, he observed the gathered crowd. The group was made up almost entirely of soldiers in more formal wear. They wore dark green slacks and light green button down shirts with suits the same color as their pants covering them.

The group had mixed expressions. Some of them were clearly angry and scowled at Drew as he passed them by. Others were more curious as they leaned forward and carefully observed his expression. They were not part of the meeting inside and were most likely eager to learn the details. Drew noted that these men had much less protection than the General.

The same man who escorted them to the General’s office approached and said, “Come with me.”

Drew and an invisible Carol followed the soldier through the winding, drab hallways within their headquarters. On the way, Drew closed the distance and asked cheerfully, “So, I saw a Dunkin Donuts on the way here. I have a friend who would kill for a donut, is it still open?”

Within his domain, he sensed Carol silently cover her face with her palm and hang her head in disbelief.

The escort shook his head. “No, all food operations have been closed and centralized while we ration our supplies.”

“That’s a shame.”

“Yes, well, drastic measures were necessary after we took in tens of thousands of refugees.”

Drew froze which caused the soldier to turn. His brows raised in shock. “Tens of thousands?

“Yes.” The man confirmed and gestured for Drew to continue down the corridor. “Twice now you have disrupted our efforts to save more of the population from the creatures. Although, I admit most of those we saved were within the first week. Since then… Well, most people now do not wish to accompany us.”

“How many people live on this base now?”

“A little over fifty thousand, I believe.”

Drew whistled. “How do you feed that many people?”

“As I said before, rationing. Also, the creatures seem to throw themselves against our defenses. Most of our diet now consists of their meat.”

Drew winced in sympathy. “That’s got to suck. It may keep you alive, but it tastes like crap.”

“Agreed.” The man cracked a smile for the first time. However, it soon disappeared and he became formal once more. He again gestured ahead of them and said, “Mister Webber, can you please continue this way?”

Drew remained silent as he was escorted from the building. His thoughts were busy planning their next steps and contingencies. At that moment, he wished he could consult with Carol. There was a lot to discuss, but that would have to wait. Regardless, her presence was comforting to him. He was not safe yet and he was glad to have her as a secret weapon.

Drew knew that eventually the military would find out where they lived and would have leverage over him.
